When purchasing a weighted blanket, an important consideration should be its washability. Consider the overall construction and design of the blanket. Not all layers of weighted blankets are created equal. Just like you would put your down comforter inside of a duvet cover, some weighted blankets also offer a washable outer cover that can be customized by fabric texture, color, or pattern. This feature makes it easier to keep your weighted blanket clean as it is easy to remove the cover and wash just the outside, as you would a duvet cover. Be sure to fasten velcro, snaps, zippers, or buttons before washing to avoid damage such as snags and tears, and wash with like colors.
Other weighted blankets are constructed as a single piece, making it necessary to launder the entire blanket every time as the cover is not removable. If you have a larger and heavier bed-sized weighted blanket without a removable cover, this could require professional laundering so you don’t max out your washer/dryer’s capabilities and damage your appliances! When the entire blanket needs to be washed, this is when the interior material contents are most importantly considered.
WHAT’S INSIDE YOUR BLANKET?
Cotton fill, polyfill, poly (plastic) pellets, glass beads, or DIY filler such as sand, buckwheat, etc.? The contents in your weighted blanket will affect washability and durability. Be sure to keep this in mind as you may not be able to dry some interior materials on high heat.
Blue Hill Sleep Co. weighted blankets are machine washable, just make sure to use a cold water gentle cycle. You can also put both pieces in the dryer on low heat. Do not use fabric softener with the minky outer cover! Softeners tend to cling on to the fibers and can lead to drastic reduction in the softness of your minky cover. Vinegar is an excellent natural fabric softener and can be used with minky fabrics.
For other weighted blankets, always consult the washing instructions provided with your blanket purchase. In the event that none exist, err on the side of caution and dry with low heat or hang to dry (and use the dryer as no-heat fluff option if desired).
With proper care your weighted blanket will last you for many years and be one of your best investments for good sleep and better health.
